1492: Conquest of Paradise

release year: 1992
genre: advanture/drama
viewing setting: home laserdisc, 8/3/99
what I expected: wasn't sure
what I got: a long, slow "epic" adventure

synopsis: In the late 1400s, when nobody wants to accept that the world was round, explorer Christopher Columbus sets out to prove that there is land beyond the ocean.

impressions: It started out good, with a sense of purpose and a wide scope. It bogged down, though; the accents made it hard to understand what the hell was going on at times. Also, the logic of some of the characters defied sensibility.

acting: Gerard Depardieu did fine, but all in all, nobody really stood out for me here.

final word: Epic in scope but boring in places.

rating: C-
