The Four Musketeers

release year: 1973
genre: comedy/adventure
viewing setting: home DVD, 6/11/99
what I expected: more of the same stuff as in the first movie
what I got: the same stuff, maybe a little more grim this time

synopsis: In this direct continuation of The Three Musketeers, our heroes must defend themselves against the machinations of the Countess De Winter.

impressions: While light-hearted like the first movie (they were filmed simultaneously) this one had some darker moments...murders, executions, and so forth. It also had funny parts, such as the bet made during a battle where the musketeers wager that they can go take a building and then eat breakfast in it. Still, overall it was slow and you really had to listen to pick up on everything.

acting: Same as before, though again it was Oliver Reed who was the funniest. The others were almost forgettable.

final word: slightly less entertaining sequel

rating: C
