Alligator 2: The Mutation

release year: 1991
genre: horror
viewing setting: home VHS, 1/17/99
what I expected: a corny sequel
what I got: an inferior sequel

synopsis: There are more alligator problems beneath the city streets, and the few who are sensible enough to see the truth have to do something before an evil real estate tycoon opens his new development.

impressions: While watchable, this was inferior to the original in all ways. The alligator killed less people, it looked less realistic, and yet the basic plot was the same. The one opportunity for the movie to redeem itself - when the title character was headed for a crowded carnival - didn't pan out at all.

acting: Nothing really special here. the lead cop and the lead hunter, plus the bad tycoon, were the better characters.

final word: Inferior sequel, barely worth seeing; lacks the bite of the original.

rating: C- (I was tempted to give it a D, but it wasn't that bad - it just wasn't that good either)
