Avatar: The Last Airbender, season 1 (2024)

release year: 2024
genre: action/adventure (8 episodes)
viewing setting: home streaming 2/22-24/2024

synopsis: In a world with some who can control the four elements, a once-in-a-lifetime master of all four appears...and then vanishes for a century, allowing one of the four kingdoms to begin taking over the world. Now it's up to the Avatar and various friends to try and set things right.

impressions: This was a long-awaited adaptation of an epic animated series, and I thought it was pretty damn good. It's definitely not a kids' show - there is voilence and death. The cast of characters is large, with notable heroes and villains. The storyline moves along fairly well (less one point where he's three deep in side quests, but soon gets back on track.) And the special effects are great, sometimes spectacular. I hope they make more seasons.

acting: Gordon Cormier is the young but fairly wise saviour of the world, if he can figure out how to do it. Kiawentilo and Ian Ousley are siblings who join with him early on, and help him stay on track. Dallas Liu is the often-bratty son of the most powerful kindgom's ruler, and has a lot to learn both about maturity and about his father's motivations. Elizabeth Yu is his sister, who embraces the family evil. Daniel Dae Kim is that king, who's also a strong contender for world's worst father. Ken Leung plays (as he always does) a bad guy who's a total asshole. There are many more supporting characters who seem poised to have larger roles in future seasons.

final word: Great, entertaining epic saga, well worth watching.
