Birds of Prey

"Six bucks for tap water with a fucking cucumber stick in it? THAT'S crazy. I'm not shopping at this store. I'm robbing this store. Consider this your first lesson: paying is for dummies."   - Harley Quinn

release year: 2020
genre: action/comedy
viewing setting: home Bluray 2/24/26

synopsis: After splitting from the Joker, insane criminal Harley Quinn finds new adventures, enemies, and friends.

impressions: I think this was DC's Deadpool - it used a lot of the same methods (talking directly to the audience, jumping back and forth in time to tell the story non-linearly, lots of profanity and jokes.) I didn't go into it with any particular expectations, and I found it to be entertaining while sticking to the DC characters and history. It would be nice if this, the other movies, and the various TV shows could somehow all be integrated into one coherent universe like Marvel managed to do.

acting: Margot Robbie is the narratior/protagonist/lunatic and does a great job, just as she did in other movies with this character. Jurnee Smollett-Bell is a singer with an unusually-powerful voice. Rosie Perez is a tough cop. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an assassin seeking revenge. Ella Jay Brasco is a pickpocketing kid who steals the wrong thing. Ewan McGregor is the crime boss who wants that item back and ends up opposed to all of these women. Ali Wong has a minor role as a district attorney.

final word: Fast-paced, insane fun.
