Black Adam

release year: 2022
genre: superhero action/adventure
viewing setting: airplane 7/6/23

synopsis: A superpowered being from the past returns in modern times, where his simple and lethal methods draw the attention of various parties.

impressions: This was more of a standalone story - in which numerous superheroes we've never heard of before suddenly appear - and as such it was pretty good. One does wonder what would happen if Adam squared off against Superman. He's that powerful, and as in many such cases, his weak point is the regular, non-invulnerable people he befriends. Still, it was a lot of fun to watch him dominate all fights we was in, and vaporize bad guys left and right.

acting: Dwayne Johnson is good as the really powerful antihero here. Aldis Hodge is an overly-cocky winged superhero. Pierce Brosnan, Quintessa Swindell, and Noah Centineo are the other members of his superhero team. Sarah Shahi is the professor/freedom-fighter whose family is at the center of the conflict with the evil corporation. Bodhi Sabongui is her rather idealistic young son. Mohammed Amer is her brother, who provides some comic relief.

final word: Entertaining DC superhero action that doesn't really fit into their existing universe.
