Blackbeard

release year: 2004
genre: pirate action
viewing setting: home DVD, 9/11/07

synopsis: Spirited pirate lord Blackbeard is running amok, and a British naval officer is sent to the colonies to stop him.

impressions: This is actually a TV miniseries and it's pretty good, though it takes some liberties with the historical material (which has always been kind of vague to begin with.) The main thing is that Blackbeard's obsessed with finding the hidden treasure of Captain Kidd. Throw in a love interest and some corrupt officials, plus a good dose of seaborne battle and treasure hunting, and you've got a pretty good pirate movie.

something this movie has that no other movie has: A woman with a tattooed treasure map on her back.

acting: Angus McFadden is Blackbeard, who is more chaotic and unpredictable than violent and bloodthirsty. xxxx is Maynard, who's been charged with putting an end to the piracy. xxxx is xxxxxx, the adopted daughter of the local governor, who falls for Maynard and vice versa.

final word: Good, well-made pirate action.
