Boogie Nights

release year: 1997
genre: drama/comedy
viewing setting: theater, 12/28/97
what I expected: I wasn't sure
what I got: a look inside the adult film industry

synopsis: A 17-year old kid with a single asset - a 13-inch penis - breaks into the porn industry and takes it by storm.

impressions: This was interesting, though it took a turn for the grimmer in the second half. Maybe this was because most of the major characters were cocaine addicts, but that's just a guess. This story follows the lives and careers of a number of people: the kid who becomes a star, the old director, the aging star who's his wife, and so on. It's a good study in characters.

acting: Mark Wahlberg (aka Marky Mark) did a great job here, much as I hate to admit it. Burt Reynolds also did well, as did several other supporting cast members.

final word: Worth seeing, especially if you've always wondered about the porn industry.

rating: C
