The Cabin in the Woods

"You've seen horrible things: an army of nightmare creatures. And they are real. But they are nothing compared to what lies beneath us. There is a greater good, and for that you must be sacrificed. Forgive us... and let us end it quickly.."    - the Director

release year: 2012
genre: horror
viewing setting: home Bluray, 11/25/17 and 1/8/13

synopsis: Five college students head to a remote mountain cabin, where they will be stalked by monsters - but that's just the tip of the very intriguing iceberg.

impressions: This is a really tough one to review without spoiling. For that reason, this review will be short and lacking in detail. This is almost a parody of the majority of horror films ever made, but also a tribute. It's entertaining just for the surface material, but when you get underneath that into the true guts of what's going on...wow. Simply amazing. WATCH IT AND SEE. Trust me.

something this movie has that no other movie has: I can't spoil it, but if you watch the movie you will see and approve

acting: Kristen Connolly is the main (innocent) girl. Chris Hemsworth (pre-Thor fame) is the jock. Anna Hutchison is the whore. Jesse Williams is the smart guy. Fran Kranz is funniest, as a perpetually-stoned doofus. These are archetypes, and this becomes important as the plot progresses. The two main technicians did good jobs, alternating between being serious and funny.

final word: This is to horror movies what Unforgiven was to westerns: it turns the genre on its ear. An absolute must-see.
