Crazy Rich Asians

Rachel: "So your family is, like, rich?"
Nick: "We're comfortable."
Rachel: "That is exactly what a super-rich person would say."

release year: 2018
genre: comedy/drama
viewing setting: home Bluray 11/28/21

synopsis: Guy brings girl home to Singapore to meet his family; the only twist is, they're ridiculously rich and look down on anyone who's not.

impressions: This was hilarous and entertaining. It takes the normal issue of a family's approval of a significant other and adds a couple more dimensions. The funny comments and offhand one-liners seldom let up, and the entirely Asian cast is a refreshing and much-needed change of pace.

acting: I couldn't even begin to list everyone, so I'll stick to those with the biggest roles. Constance Wu and Henry Golding are the smart, likeable leads. Michelle Yeoh is the hardass mother who puts family before happiness. Awkwafina is Rachel's college friend and is hilarious. Chris Pang is Nick's best friend who helps advise him. Gemma Chan is his sister, who has problems of her own.

final word: This is a romantic comedy worth watching again.
