Deep Blue Sea 2

Durant: "Obviously, my work has been more successful than I thought."

release year: 2018
genre: horror/action
viewing setting: home DVD 7/4/21

synopsis: Sharks with enhanced brainpower menace a bunch of people at an aquatic research station.

impressions: Contrary to what you may have heard/read, this is not just a remake of the first one. It does share several of the same elements (floating research facility that ends up slowly sinking, super-intelligent sharks, tough ex-Navy main guy, brash billionaire) but there are a few new twists. One of them is the "baby sharks" which are a litter of numerous shark pups that swim and attack in formation, like piranha. In addition to allowing for some attacks that don't require a lot of special effects, this aspect gets silly sometimes. Overall, it has good production values and is entertaining, but will never come close to topping the original.

confirmed, onscreen body count: 8 humans, 1 big shark, 0 baby sharks

acting: Danielle Savre is the female lead, a shark scientist who often speaks when she should remain quiet. Rob Mayes is the tough, water-experienced male lead. Michael Beach is the insane billionaire scientist who's really responsible for the mess. Nathan Lynn is the IT guy.

final word: Decent shark movie, worth seeing once.
