Deep Blue Sea 3

release year: 2020
genre: horror/action
viewing setting: home DVD 7/5/21

synopsis: Sharks with enhanced brainpower menace a bunch of people on a floating town of some sort.

impressions: I say "a floating town of some sort" because it's never really made clear what it is. No one else seems to live there, aside from the handful of scientist-type people who apparently make a living running a web show. Anyway, time is taken to give some backstories, which makes the characters more interesting. This one had some inspired kills (including another shark-bursts-out-of-water-to-sever-a-body-part one, and another even better one which I won't spoil) and was fairly fun to watch. I need to mention the amazing underwater footage, of both marine life and the surrounding area - that was well-done.

confirmed, onscreen body count: 6 humans killed by sharks, 3 humans killed by other means, 3 sharks

acting: Tania Raymonde (the grown up version of Alex Rousseau from Lost) is the main scientist woman, who makes sure to show off her bikini-clad body multiple times. Emerson Brooks is what we started calling the "mini-Rock" due to a passing resemblance to Dwayne Johnson, although he's smaller; anyway, the dude is the tough, aggressive friend of Alex Rousseau. Nathaniel Buzolic is Rousseau's ex, who's now in league with some shady people...like Bren Foster, who plays the leader of three tough divers who turn bad, and who also look like bodybuilders. Reina Aoi brings some culture to the small island-place-town-whatever, as a Japanese grad student.

final word: Entertaining shark movie, worth seeing once.
