Demolition Man

"We're police officers! We're not trained to handle this kind of violence!"    - Erwin

release year: 1993
genre: action/sci-fi
viewing setting: home Bluray 2/11/22 and home DVD, 10/25/14 and 5/3/13 and 5/20/07 and 2/19/03

synopsis: Tough 1990s cop finally catches tough criminal, but gets framed and joins latter in crygenic stasis; 30 years later, the criminal breaks out and so the cop gets thawed to help catch him.

impressions: Not many people realize that this is part-comedy. There are numerous and frequent pokes at the culture that we could evolve into if things go a certain way: a peaceful and quiet one where everything is illegal and boring. There's also plenty of action - guns, nightsticks, and fists. Another thing that most people don't realize is that this was not only one of Sandra Bullock's first roles, but also perhaps her best; there's no romantic crap to get in the way here, just the woman walking around in a tight spandex outfit, trading quips with Stallone. Wesley Snipes as the bad guy really makes the movie, with his one-liners and insane violence (which ultimately exposes a plot hole, but I don't want to spoil it.)

acting: Stallone does a good job as a tough fish-out-of-water protagonist, and Sandra Bullock is entertaining as the future cop who's a big fan of 20th century culture. Again, it's Wesley Snipes' bleached-hair maniac who really steals the show here. Denis Leary is the leader of the people who don't want the spotlessly clean, insanely rigid lifestyle.

final word: Highly entertaining action with a comedic sci-fi twist.
