District 9

release year: 2009
genre: sci-fi
viewing setting: home DVD, 1/8/10

synopsis: In a world where a UFO has been hovering over South Africa and the aliens have been put in a government camp, racism and secret alien agendas come to the surface.

impressions: I thought this was overhyped. It had a mix of things I don't like (some documentary-style film-making, foreign accents, racism, evil characters) plus some things I did like (violence.) I guess when it was all over with, I had this sense of hopelessness regarding the main human character. I really don't care ot say more than that; it's not often that I don't like a movie and can't quite articulate why, but this is the case here.

something this movie has that no other movie has: A gigantic alien spaceship that nobody can do anything about.

acting: Sharito Copley is a somehat bumbling, naive government agent put in charge of something much bigger than himself. Jason Cope is the primary alien character.

final word: While I accept that it's probably a good movie in the conventional sense, I just didn't like it.
