Doomsday

release year: 2008
genre: post-apocalyptic sci-fi/action
viewing setting: home DVD, 8/9/08

synopsis: To save England from a persistent virus, a small team of commandos and doctors must go into a long-sealed quarantine zone and find a cure.

impressions: This was a mish-mash of several other movies, including Escape From New York and The Road Warrior. It was also made by the British, so the dialogue and locations reflect that. I'm not really sure what to say about this movie; on one hand, it had some neat elements and scenes. On the other hand, it had some really weird stuff, such as: tattooed/pierced mobs, cannibalism, branding, medieval knights in a castle, a chaacter with a removable camera eye, and last but not least, the scene in which the main tattooed/pierced bad guy addresses his legions of follwers from a stage...and proceeds to break into some kind of weird concert-like behavior. Very odd.

something this movie has that no other movie has: post-apocalyptic rock/metal concert culminating in a burning execution that turns into a cannibal feast!

acting: A buff, gruff Rhona Mitra is the leader of the soldiers. Malcolm McDowell is one of three bad-guy-faction leaders.

final word: Weird but watchable mix of many different genres and inspirations.
