Eddie Murphy: Raw

release year: 1987
genre: comedy concert
viewing setting: home DVD, 11/20/16 and 2/10/05

synopsis: This is 90 minutes of classic Eddie Murphy comedy.

impressions: This concert, like any of his others (or even any Andrew Dice Clay show) is a flashback to a bygone era...a time when you could say what you wanted and not get in trouble for it. For the record, I'm not saying that this sort of material isn't offensive - I'm just saying that it was nice when you couldn't get sued because you hurt someone's feelings. Alas, times have changed. But, when I need to be reminded of how things used to be, I can just watch this. Eddie's in classic form here, making fun of just about everyone and everything. The routine slows down toward the end (when he imitates his drunken father's antics) but this is its only weak point.

acting: This is a very different Eddie Murphy than the one who now does voices for Disney movies.

final word: Hilarious, but will offend many people.
