Empire of the Sharks

"You are a shark caller. You must believe in yourself!"   - Timor

release year: 2017
genre: shark scifi/action/drama
viewing setting: home DVD, 8/25/21

synopsis: In a future world covered with water and infested with sharks, a young kid from one floating town decides to stand up and rebel against the evil shark-controlling tyrant.

impressions: One wonders if this was filmed in parallel with Planet of the Sharks which contains many of the same things: crude floating settlements, people who are barely surviving, sharks that roar underwater and fly above water. This was reasonably well-made, though it did have several plot holes. Like all of the other shark movies we've watched recently, it was made for TV which means no blood, no gore, no nudity, no profanity. This is the story of a small band of people who stand up to a ruthless despot. And sharks.

acting: Jack Armstrong channels Orlando Bloom as the young, defiant hero. Ashley de Lange is his paramour who may have super shark powers. John Savage is the evil warlord whose magic technological gloves allow him to control sharks while making faces as if he's badly constipated. Jonathan Pienaar is his right-hand evil henchman.

final word: Another Waterworld-with-sharks type movie, but surprisingly entertaining.
