Eternals

"We have loved these people since the day we arrived. When you love something, you protect it."   - Thena

release year: 2021
genre: superhero action
viewing setting: theater, 12/9/21

synopsis: Unknown to humanity, two much older and more powerful races have been on Earth, fighting as part of a larger plan.

impressions: Once you get past the "why didn't these people participate in the worldwide events of previous Marvel films?" question, you can sit back and enjoy this. It's a new team of superpowered beings, here because of even more powerful aliens, and the truth is somewhat murky. While it had plenty of action (which was really well-done, by the way...I can't imagine movies like this getting made in the 1980s or before) this was also a plot- and character-driven effort.

acting: So many characters! Most prominent were Gemma Chan as the matter-manipulating new leader, Richard Madden as the most powerful one, Kumali Nanjiani as the funny one, Lia McHugh as the one trapped in a child's body, Brian Tyree Henry as the inventor, Lauren Ridloff as the speedster, Barry Keoghan as the disenchanted one who can control minds, Don Lee as the strong one, Angelina Jolie as the warrior, and Salma Hayek as the weary former leader. Harish Patel and Kit Harington are notable humans involved with the Eternals.

final word: A different, but fun, part of the Marvel universe.
