Eye of the Beast

release year: 2007
genre: giant monster
viewing setting: home DVD, 8/14/21

synopsis: A giant squid is eating people in and around a lake.

impressions: For a low-budget monster movie, this one had pretty good production values and acting. While there was definitely more human drama than monster action, the former was engaging enough to keep my attention. Until the end, we didn't get much of the monster - a tentacle here, a snatched victim there - but again, it was okay. If it's any indication, my 75-year-old mother sat through this one and when it was over, she said "that was pretty good."

body count: 8

acting: James Van Der Beek is the young scientist trying to do the right thing. Alexandra Castillo is the head cop whose credibility is in question with the fishermen, and sort of resembles Minnie Driver at times. Arne McPherson is the crusty old leader of those fishermen, and sort of resembles Willem Dafoe at times. Ryan Black is an Indian grieving the loss of his sister.

final word: Surprisingly well-done and entertaining.
