Fast X

"You made one mistake. You never took my car."   - Dom

release year: 2023
genre: action
viewing setting: home Bluray 8/14/23

synopsis: The team is targeted for revenge by the son of a past villain.

impressions: This is the second-to-last movie in the series (supposedly) and they continue with the pattern of bringing in new characters cleverly tied to past events, and bringing back people thought to be dead. Insane action-sequence highlights in this one include some of the heroes being chased by - and then later chasing - a big burning metal sphere containing a bomb, including driving backwards down a long winding set of stairs. The laws of physics and sanity are ignored several times, for example when a car is driven out of the back of an airplane that's several hundred feet anbove the road and the chase in progress. If I had to sum up the series writers' bible at this point, I'd say "if someone's in a fast car, they can do anything." Yet for all that, it's good mindless fun and the script does its damndest to tie together everything it can.

acting: Like many ensemble casts, this one's too big to talk about everybody. Jason Statham is back, but Dwayne Johnson isn't - yet. The major new addition is Jason Momoa as the insane, over-the-top bad guy. Alan Ritchson makes his first appearance here, as the new secret-agency-guy-in-charge. Brie Larson also debuts as the helpful daughter of the previous guy in charge, who's now missing.

final word: Fast-paced, turn-off-your-brain entertainment.
