Field of Dreams

release year: 1989
genre: drama
viewing setting: home DVD, 6/25/03

synopsis: For no logical reason, an Iowa farmer builds a baseball field on his farm...and then magical things start to happen.

impressions: Very inspiring, especially if you're a baseball fan. The idea here seemed to be that sometimes you have to follow your heart. Another idea is that you might think you have another day to do something, but actually today is the only day to do it. Anyway, the field he builds amidst his corn attracts the ghosts of baseball players as well as some who never got to live that dream. I found it to be very powerful, given that I've wanted to play baseball but realized it too late in my life to make it happen.

things to watch for: The first time an entire team appears on the ballfield - that was special.

something this movie has that no other movie has: Ghosts playing baseball for the pure love of the game.

acting: Kevin Costner does a good job as a guy who does what he knows is right, even at great risk. Amy Madigan is impressive as his wife, who trusts and believes in her husband no matter what. James Earl Jones has a good role as an aging writer who gets another chance to cover some choice material. The girl who played the Kinsellas' daughter did a cute job too.

final word: Worth seeing for anyone who believes in dreams.
