Friday the 13th: Vengeance
"All right. Keep your eyes and ears open...and if you need anything, holler. Or scream. I'm just saying, given the current situation it's a valid suggestion." - journalist
release year: 2019
genre: horror
viewing setting: home streaming 9/17/25
synopsis: Decades after the events of the last theatrical movies, bad things once more happen in Crystal Lake and the vicinity.
impressions: This is another of the many Friday the 13th fan-made films, and it's pretty good as far as looking and feeling like one of the first few original movies in the series. The atmosphere and sound effects are excellent, as are Jason's outfit and the blood/gore. And there are a TON of fatalities - some from the "main" group of people but most of whom are random victims (a haunted tour group, some hunters, the occupants of a car that breaks down, a work crew of inmates plus the guards watching them, another tour group.) These deaths are swift and brutal - even near the end of the movie, pretty much no one who encounters Jason survives. There are also some attempts to link current and past characters and align with past continuity - and other attempts to expand the continuity too. Interestingly, Jason's father is in this movie, and not just stumbling about - he's pissed and he kills people too, just not as many as his zombie son. (He also apparently uses magic a couple of times, but with a dozen of these movies and all kinds of plot inconsistencies, maybe a little magic is needed.) Of note: they clearly set things up for a sequel, so I'll be watching that soon.
acting: There are literally a couple dozen small but memorable characters here (almost all of whom don't survive..) Rather than discuss them, I'll mention that a couple of the actors actually played Jason in early installments in the series.
final word: Good entertaining fan film that aims a little higher than just being a tribute or standalone story.
