Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters / City on the Edge of Battle / The Planet Eater

release year: 2017-2018
genre: Godzilla
viewing setting: home Bluray, 5/14-15/21

synopsis: In the future, a colony ship gives up and returns to Earth, only to find that Godzilla didn't die off as hoped.

impressions: This was an animated Japanese Toho/Netflix collaboration that was made in parallel with (but unrelated to) the American-made Godzilla movies. I'm reviewing all three in one shot because they're essentially one giant movie. It started off well - sci-fi, with two alien races on board, and the tough decision to return to earth, and then the challenges they faced from Godzilla and other creatures. But then it added elements of technology and religion, and the main protagonist demonstrated extremely poor leadership abilities and a failure to see the big picture, and I got agitated. Add to that a lack of battles with other giant monsters (or indeed, their mere presence) and overall, I was disappointed.

number in Godzilla series: 30-31-32

acting: It was animated, but the voice actors all did good jobs.

final word: Something different in the world of Godzilla, but ultimately it felt futile and empty.
