Godzilla Minus One

release year: 2023
genre: sci-fi/fantasy/action
viewing setting: theater 12/9/23

synopsis: This origin story tracks the formation and early rampages of Godzilla, in the mid-to-late 1940s.

impressions: This was a very serious look at the early days of Godzilla, and the people impacted by his early activities. It's got giant monster destruction, but it's also got a major human story element, tying together a bunch of people whose lives have been changed by the monster's actions. This is powerful and in many ways evokes the 1954 original and the effect it had on postwar Japan at the time.

acting: Thanks to subtitles (as opposed to dubbing) it's easier to see the acting despite it being in another language. Ryunosuke Kamiki is the main guy, who showed cowardice in the past and now carries a lot of guilt. Minami Hamabe is a woman who he partners with to raise an infant, but who he can't express his feelings for. Hidetaka Yoshioka is a scientist-type who comes up with some plans to stop Godzilla. Munetaka Aoki is a plane repairman who ties into the story's past and present.

final word: Powerful drama that really showcases the human element amidst Godzilla's rampage of destruction.
