synopsis: A hotshot test pilot without a care in the world gets chosen by an alien ring to wield its tremendous power.

impressions: I'm not sure why critics hated this - it seemed solid to me. It's got great special effects, evil villains, science-fiction elements, and a main hero character who changes for the better during all of this. The movie does well as both an origin story and a standalone adventure.

acting: Ryan Reynolds is the wisecracking, commitment-free daredevil who learns a few things about himself and gains a greater purpose. Blake Likely is his absolutely stunningly gorgeous love interest (and boss.) Peter Sarsgaard is a dorky guy who becomes a pawn of the main villain. Clancy Brown provides the ominous voice of that villain.

final word: Good superhero action, worth seeing.
