I Spit on Your Grave

release year: 1978
genre: nasty revenge
viewing setting: home laserdisc, 8/9/98
what I expected: very low-quality crap
what I got: pretty much that

synopsis: A city girl goes to the country, gets beaten and raped by four locals, then kills them.

impressions: This movie was banned in some countries, and I can see why. It's got some graphic rape scenes and an equally vicious castration. There were two additional reasons why I didn't care for the film. One: it was SLOW. Even unexceptional events, such as a boy walking from one side of a room to the other, took an agonizingly long time. Few movies I have ever seen have dragged along like this one did. Two: there's nothing new or exceptional here in the way of plot. Think about it: naive city girl with no training, weapons, or motivation goes deep into the country and is friendly to everyone. Then, after savage abuse is inflicted upon her, she suddenly gets real mean, real fast. But she only kills four people, and at least two of these retaliatory murders are fairly unoriginal and boring. Oh well, such is life. We had to watch this, just like we had to watch Caligula and Faces of Death. And like those, this won't get high marks.

acting: Quite bad.

final word: I can't recommend this to anybody, unless you feel compelled to view controversial, banned movies.

rating: D
