synopsis: In the late 1800s, an Earthman finds himself transported to Mars and caught up in events there.

impressions: This was damn entertaining, with great special effects and plentiful action. I have no idea why so many critics panned it; I can only guess that they think every movie needs to contend for Academy awards. Whatever. This was what a movie of its genre should be: fun. Just good, escapist fun.

acting: Taylor Kitsch does a good job as a weary soldier who learns how to care about things again. Lynn Collins combines smart, sassy, and competent as a warrior/scientist/princess. Dominic West is the evil warlord.

final word: Great entertainment, regardless of what others say; fun and well worth watching.
