Jonah Hex

release year: 2010
genre: western action
viewing setting: home DVD, 3/17/12

synopsis: Scarred bounty hunter Jonah Hex gets involved in the stopping of a sinister plot, which is masterminded by his blood enemy.

impressions: As a fan of the comic books upon which this movie was based, I was somewhat disappointed. I'm not sure who thought it would be a good idea to inject some superweaponry and mysticism into what should have been a straight Western, but they need to be fired from their job. Revenge and gunfights I can handle; highly-advanced handguns and city-destroying shells I can't. Not in this movie with this character. I did like the violence and fighting, and some aspects of the supernatural were interesting - but they just didn't belong here.

something this movie has that no other movie has: A dynamite-firing, repeating handgun.

acting: Josh Brolin does his best as a deadly-serious antihero. John Malkovich is nasty as the ruthless and obsessed main bad guy. Megan Fox is the lady of the night who's in love with the scarred Jonah. Michael Fassbender is an insane, evil Irish henchman.

final word: Worth watching, but not the masterpiece it should have been.
