Journey to the Center of the Earth

release year: 2008
genre: adventure
viewing setting: home DVD 12/22/23 and theater 8/31/08

synopsis: A scientist, his nephew, and a mountain guide follow his missing brother's trail and end up in the wondrous but dangerous center of the world.

impressions: I sure hate to say "fun for the whole family" but this was just that: a PG-level adventure that had plenty of danger, action, and thrills. It felt a lot like the 1959 movie, except with less explorers and modern equipment and language. This movie has a lot: a roller-coaster-like ride on a runaway mine cart, seemingly-endless falls, underground oceans, sea dinosaurs, volcanos and lava, and even a T-Rex.

something this movie has that no other movie has: people surviving a 30+ second freefall

acting: Brandan Fraser is the main guy, who just wants to find out what happened to his brother. Josh Hutcherson is his nephew, who seems obsessed with video games but quickly breaks out of his shell. Anita Briem is the mountain guide, whose skills really come in handy.

final word: This was a fun, fast-paced adventure that I'd recommend to anyone.
