Justified (season 6)

release year: 2015
genre: crime drama
viewing setting: home DVD, 6/5-14/15 (13 episodes)

synopsis: The sixth and final season introduces a new bad guy, who wants to buy up local land as the key to his future plans, and whose fortune becomes the focal plot point of the final showdown.

impressions: It's Sam Elliott! He's the wily, confident, and sometimes ruthless old criminal Markham, who has designs on Harlan County. And Boyd has designs on the millions of dollars in Markham's big safe. And the cops figure that once Boyd goes for that money, if they can catch him in the act, they can put him away forever, which was kind of the stated goal when this series started. Of course, both the cops and the various bad guys have all sorts of related and unrelated problems and conflicts going on, which just complicates everything. Needless to say, a lot of people die before it's all over.

acting: Actors who stood out this season: Sam Elliott is great as the new head bad guy. Garret Dillahunt is both intelligent and menacing as his main henchman. Jonathan Tucker is great as a cocky young fast-drawing gunman. Mary Steenburgen is an incidental bad woman. From the regulars, Joelle Carter as Ava is fairly central to this season, ditto Walton Goggins and Timothy Olyphant as the opposing main guys.

final word: The end to a gritty, entertaining crime drama set in a somewhat-backwards area.
