Leviathan

release year: 1989
genre: underwater monster
viewing setting: home streaming 10/30/23

synopsis: An underwater mining station finds a sunken ship, takes some things from it, and unleashes monsters.

impressions: This was one of several underwater monster movies from the late 1980s. The nature of the monster wasn't clear - it seemed to go from something held in liquid form to a bad skin rash to tentacles and then a severed limb that crawled around, finally ending up as a big, hulking thing that ripped through steel doors. Still, there was sufficient underwater tension with all the chances of drowning, implosion, etc in addition to being killed by the various phases of the monster.

acting: Peter Weller is the often-weary and indecisive leader. Richard Crenna is a doctor who first appears to be lazy but then becomes fairly useful. Amanda Pays is the main female protagonist. Ernie Hudson provides most of the humor. Daniel Sterm is a grunt who possesses perhaps the skinniest, most muscle-devoid arms of anyone in any movie. Meg Foster and her evil eyes are the surface-bound corporate asshole person.

final word: It was decent, and moved along, but probably wasn't the best of that crop from 30+ years ago.
