Lost in Space

release year: 1998
genre: sci-fi
viewing setting: home laserdisc, 10/4/98
what I expected: no idea
what I got: corny, generally aimless family sci-fi/action

synopsis: Thanks to a saboteur, the Robinson family's colonization trip turns into a fight for survival, and to get home.

impressions: Great special effects! However...it started off strong, but fizzled later on. Why? Lack of sensible science, and a comprehensible plot. Nothing made sense after a point, including what the characters were doing. Perhaps time travel would have been best left out of this movie. Another thing: the protagonists forgot basic rule #1: when someone tries to kill you, do NOT let them live! Aaaaargh!

acting: Good on all accounts, though some of the characters were intentionally goofy. I thought the robot did a great job, especially when he went nuts and drove around shouting "DESTROY! DESTROY!"

final word: More for kids than adults.

rating: C
