Man of Steel

Jor-El: "Goodbye, my son. Our hopes and dreams travel with you."
Lara: "He will be an outcast. They'll kill him."
Jor-El: "How? He'll be a god to them."

release year: 2013
genre: superhero action
viewing setting: home Bluray 10/10/15

synopsis: A baby from a dying world is sent to Earth, where he is raised as a human and grows into a really, really powerful adult.

impressions: I've ignored this one since it came out, due to the 2006 Superman movie (which I didn't like)...but I'm glad I finally watched it. This was a perfect reboot, capturing what it would actually be like to not only be singularly powerful but also feared. And then they threw in a mob of bad guys with the same level of power. And some sci-fi elements. And various compelling backstories. But the action...there are multiple big battles, and like some other recent superhero movies, it's pretty obvious that when people such as these fight, hundreds or even thousands of people will die.

acting: Henry Cavill does a great job with both the look and behavior of a Superman. Michael Shannon is the antagonistic General Zod, who's willing to kill our planet to get what he wants. Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe are Superman's adopted and natural fathers, respectively, who both impart a great deal of wisdom to him. Diane Lane is his adopted mother. Amy Adams is pushy reporter Lois Lane. Laurence Fishburne is the editor-in-chief of the newspaper. Christopher Meloni is a kick-ass Air Force officer. Antje Traue is Zod's tough right-hand woman.

final word: Solid action-packed Superman movie, well worth seeing.
