Mega Shark vs Kolossus

release year: 2015
genre: giant monster horror/drama
viewing setting: home DVD, 9/2/21

synopsis: Another mega-shark appears, but this time it doesn't just have to deal with the U.S. Navy, it also has to contend with a Cold War era Soviet robot.

impressions: Madness, biut fun madness, not unlike the better of the 1970s Godzilla movies. I had a good time watching it, and didn't even feel compelled to track things like body count or logic errors. The shark was flipping aircraft carriers and leaping onto battleships, which was great. And then there was the big old robot, which actually looked menacing (and was.) There was a lot of human drama and plots going on too, including a late plot twist. The only real flaws I noted: the robot throws the shark INTO ORBIT to take out a satellite (and then then shark falls back into the ocean, unfazed.)

acting: This movie had four "lesser clones": a Samuel L. Jackson knock-off who was overly determined to kill the shark, a Ming-Na Wen clone who was obviously modeled after her character in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a Cary Elwes clone who was the billionaire inventor, and a Keith Urban clone who was the CIA analyst sidekick. And they all did really good jobs with their characters!

final word: Surprisingly entertaining - really a lot of fun.
