Monty Python and the Holy Grail

release year: 1974
genre: British comedy
viewing setting: home laserdisc, 5/14/97
what I expected: to be bored
what I got: proof that a movie-watching experience can be brought down by the audience

synopsis: In a comical series of skits, King Arthur's knights seek out the Holy Grail so they can save the land.

impressions: I now know what the problem with movies like this is: I've always been stuck watching them with people who know every line, recite every line, never stay quiet for more than 2 seconds, and thereby make the movie unwatchable. If you're one of these people, and you're out there, and you're reading this, consider: I avoided this movie (as well as The Princess Bride) for many years because of people JUST LIKE YOU! Whew. Now that that's out of the way, I'll talk about the movie. I admit, I found it to be funny in parts, and definitely watchable. I guess when a bunch of geeks aren't around ruining a movie like this, I am capable of enjoying it. The humor has that distinctive Monty Python slant, but it wasn't bad at all.

acting: Seemed funny to me. I don't have much experience with either MP or British material in general, though.

final word: Worth watching, at least once - more if you like this sort of thing.

rating: C
