Mortal Kombat

release year: 2021
genre: martial arts
viewing setting: home Bluray, 7/17/21

synopsis: A small group of fighters gathers to figure out their role in something much bigger.

impressions: I was disappointed. Early on, it just charges into the concept of a fighting tournament against people (and creatures) from other dimensions, as if that's normal and seen often. Some of the fights either happened too fast, or in near-darkness, such that it was hard to tell what exactly was happening. On the bright side, the fights were brutal, often with gory fatal endings right out of the video game. And that's what this movie really is: fan service for those who love the games.

acting: Lewis Tan is the main guy, who has a link to a past warrior. Jessica McNamee is a soldier without the special mark, who has to find her place in the events. Josh Lawson is the treacherous (and often humorous) Kano. Mehcad Brooks is another soldier who catches a bad break. Joe Taslim is the evil Sub-Zero. You know, I don't know why I'm doing this...they're all just characters from a video game series.

final word: While I'm not sure this remake was necessary, it is entertaining and has some cool fights.
