Mosquito

release year: 1995
genre: horror/comedy
viewing setting: home VHS, 12/23/02

synopsis: UFO crash in swamp leads to leakage which mosquitos eat, causing them to enlarge significantly.

impressions: Very low-budget, using both puppets and CGI for the title characters. It was entertaining, but barely so, as it contained some bad lines, inane actions, and bizarre fights against the big bugs. The movie gets bonus points for including Gunnar Hansen (who played Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and double bonus points for having him use a chainsaw and make an offhanded comment about it!

things to watch for: When the mosquito attacks the naked woman in her tent.

acting: It was okay, though handicapped by some bad lines on several accounts. The dorky park ranger character whined too much, the woman was often stupid, and her boyfriend was too confrontational.

final word: Worth seeing, but it's at the low end of its genre.
