My Bloody Valentine

release year: 2009
genre: horror
viewing setting: home DVD, 5/20/09

synopsis: Ten years after a past murder spree, someone dressed in a miner suit and helmet is at it again.

impressions: Pretty good remake. It had a fast pace, some surprises, and plenty of the requisite R-rated horror movie requirements. The weapon of choice was a pickaxe, and in fact, every murder was done with this weapon, to gory effect.

body count: 10 seen directly on screen, plus dozens more where the carnage is seen after the fact

something this movie has that no other movie has: a shovel to the face, which when pushed, splits the top of the head from the rest

acting: Kerr Smith is the young sheriff, and Jensen Ackles is his friend; they wanted the same woman ten years ago, so now that's a sore point (plus they both might be the killer, based on clues and evidence we see.) Jaime King is the woman, who ended up marrying one guy but still loves the other. Tom Atkins is the old, retired sheriff and Kevin Tighe is an old miner.

final word: Good, enjoyable back-to-basics horror film.
