My Science Project
"Hey! These are all optical delusions. Like ghosts, so it's cool!" - Vince
release year: 1985
genre: sci-fi/comedy
viewing setting: home DVD 2/21/26
synopsis: A below-average high school student who only cares about cars finds a strange alien power source which causes all sorts of trouble.
impressions: I'd never really known about this, so it was a pleasant surprise. It had some high school comedy and silly characters, but also featured a device that could open doors to other worlds and/or times. Like many movies from this era, there are a lot of blink-and-you'll-miss-them lines and facial expressions; I suggest subtitles and lack of background noise.
acting: John Stockwell (who I best remember as the good guy from Christine) is the car/motor-obsessed student. Fisher Stevens is his wanabe-tough-guy best friend. Danielle von Zerneck is a geeky girl who gets involved. Barry Corbin is a dork who also gets involved. Dennis Hopper is a teacher whose directive (to turn in an awesome science project) set all this into motion.
final word: Low-key but entertaining comedy with sci-fi elements..
