A Nightmare on Elm Street part 2

release year: 1985
genre: horror
viewing setting: home DVD, 10/9/99
what I expected: a crappy sequel
what I got: a crappy sequel

synopsis: Freddy's at it again, this time focusing on the kid who moved into the house of the heroine from the first movie.

impressions: Stupid parents and stupid teenagers made the acting almost unbearable. Though Freddy hammed it up even more, and though there were some neat special effects, this movie had a big problem: the powers and weaknesses of Freddy weren't consistent within the movie, much less consistent with the first movie. It was as if the writers just changed the rules they'd worked so hard to establish, just to let Freddy do some weird or horrific new thing. Plus, the movie wasn't scary at all; its typical attempt to scare the viewer consisted of cranking up the music suddenly when Freddy showed up. So, what ends up happening in a movie like this is you have to turn the volume way up to hear the dialogue, and then suddenly there's really loud music tones blasting and you have to turn it down. This is a BIG pet peeve of mine! Another note of anger: it had multiple male butt nudity but NO female nudity. Big no-no.

acting: Robert Englund hammed it up even more this time around, and was really the only entertaining character in the movie.

the good: A few good special-effects and humor moments (mainly when Freddy made some comment as he gutted somebody.)

the bad: Very slow, inappropriate male/female nudity ratio, mostly unlikeable characters.

final word: Bad sequel, bad movie.

rating: D
