Nightwatch

release year: 2004
genre: fantasy/action/drama
viewing setting: home DVD, 9/10/06

synopsis: According to an ancient truce, agents of darkness and light wage a silent vigil to keep each other in check...until a boy who is destined to change everything comes along.

impressions: This was really weird, and though it had some really neat ideas, the execution was lacking. The main protagonist sometimes seemed aloof, confused, or just plain stupid. People did things that made no sense, for reasons that were never revealed. Some things were cleared up at the end, but overall, the movie was still lacking. I understand that this was part one of a three-part Russian movie epic, and perhaps this different style of moviemaking just didn't resonate well with me. Still, I didn't think the movie was really that good.

something this movie has that no other movie has: A mail truck with rocket boosters.

acting: It wasn't bad, but the dubbing/subtitling issue caused some performances to be blunted.

final word: Confusing dark fantasy from another country.
