Pirates of the Caribbean

release year: 2003
genre: pirate adventure
viewing setting: home streaming 5/16/22 and theater, 7/13/03

synopsis: Cursed pirates kidnap a young lady, and it's up to a blacksmith and a ship-less pirate to rescue her.

impressions: This was good swashbuckling entertainment. It had all sorts of good stuff: ships, cannons, people swinging from ropes, swords, guns, the living dead, pirate treasure, betrayal, jackass English aristocrats...plus a solid plot and good action-filled pacing.

things to watch for: When the pirates attack the port - good mayhem.

something this movie has that no other movie has: an evil undead monkey

acting: Johnny Depp did a good job in a really quirky role, as a lone pirate with oddities in his behavior. Orlando Bloom (aka Legolas from the Lord of the Rings movies) did a good job as the young hero who wants to save the girl he loves. Kiera Knightley was that girl, who doesn't conform to the ideas of that time period and just wants some adventure Geoffrey Rush was okay as the evil pirate captain. The guys who played the prissy English lords were suitably annoying. There were a couple of mostly-bumbling pirates who kept showing up for comic relief, and the one with the wooden eye was pretty entertaining.

final word: Solid action- and humor- filled pirate movie.
