Road House

release year: 2024
genre: action
viewing setting: home streaming 4/17/24

synopsis: A former fighter takes a job as bouncer in a rough bar.

impressions: After watching this, I prefer not to think of it as a remake of the original but rather just a standalone action movie with a similar plot. I suppose the moderninzation of that plot (UFC fighters, more diverse group of co-workers) was inevitable. The plot and action are fine, it's more that I just don't like unnecessary remakes/re-imaginings.

acting: A ripped Jake Gyllenhaal is the main hero, who's got a troubled past; it's hard to know what his exact motivations are at any point. Daniela Melchior is a doctor who falls for him. Billy Magnussen is the main bad guy, who's spoiled and ruthless. Jessica Williams is the road house owner who's smart and sassy but a bit too optimistic that things will turn out fine. Conor McGregor basically plays himself, an overconfident goon who struts around saying and doing stupid things.

final word: Good action movie, for what it is (a remake that the world didn't need.)
