A Night at the Roxbury

release year: 1998
genre: comedy
viewing setting: home DVD 2/4/23 and 6/24/12 and 10/28/04

synopsis: Two dorky brothers try to make it big in the club scene.

impressions: I never saw the Saturday Night Live skit, but this was funny in the sense of laughing at (not with) the two main characters. Their methods and lines for being cool and picking up women are so completely over-the-top that you can't help but chuckle. I got exactly what I expected out of this: simple, goofy comedy.

something this movie has that no other movie has: guys who use cardboard templates to spray gel on their sideburns

acting: Chris Kattan is the shorter, more cool brother, and Will Ferrell is the taller, slightly more normal one; both did good jobs as mega-dorks. Dan Hedaya was good as their exasperated father. Molly Shannon made a good dorky love interest. Richard Grieco was amusing as himself (he helps the brothers out to avoid a lawsuit.)

final word: Good mindless comedy (with good dance music) about being cool and scoring.
