SEAL Team (season 4)

release year: 2020-2021 (16 episodes)
genre: military drama/action
viewing setting: home streaming 10/18-23/22

synopsis: An elite military unit goes on various counter-terrorism missions around the world.

impressions: This season dealt with, among other things, the capture/torture/rescue of one of the team, an accusation of war crimes, multiple relationship complications on the home front, and the possible death of one of the team. It seems like the drama has increased while the action decreased, but then again it's been four seasons....and the issues with their home lives are real, and need to be represented.

acting: There are two kinds of male characters in this series: the ones who quietly do their job and stay in the background, and then the ones who constantly waver between being super-soldiers and trying/failing to lead normal home lives. Chief among these is David Boreanaz' Jason Hayes...a man who, while being a great team leader with a long and successful track record, often acts like an immature child. His typical response to being told he can't do something is basically "well, we have to do this because X." He can't control his temper, he can't allow himself a life outside of work, he can't appreciate when people are trying to help him, and he's too busy thinking about how things should be to accept the way they actually are. My pointed opinion here has been slowly building up for four seasons now, so there it is. Alona Tal is perhaps the most understanding of the significant others. The guy who played the new team leader, and the new DEVGRU CO, were both assholes most of the time.

final word: Outstanding military action drama, giving us regular people a glimpse into the lives of the people who directly and indirectly make the world a safer place.
