SEAL Team (season 5)

release year: 2021-2022 (14 episodes)
genre: military drama/action
viewing setting: home streaming 10/24 - 11/2/22

synopsis: An elite military unit goes on various counter-terrorism missions around the world.

impressions: Among other things, this season dealt with a marriage, a pregnancy, the rescue of a captured friend, and more. It also contained a moving tribute/remembrance of 9/11 and a pointed commentary of the ultimate futility of the U.S. efforts in Afghanistan. Between episodes 4 and 5, it switched from CBS to Paramount, and thus the profanity finally started appearing after that. I need to mention that the mixing of work and personal problems, and the challenges with that, continue here...as does the inability of the team leader to recognize that he's screwing up and putting his team in danger. Also, this season ends with a hell of a cliffhanger.

acting: I'm once again going to point out the absolute asshole of a character that David Boreanaz plays in this series. He flips back and forth between realizing he can't be an elite commando forever...and pretending that he can, despite the cost to his friends and family. Seldom has an actor had the chance to portray such a jackass. I have to wonder if it's intentional and whether the series' makers realize what they've done. Worse, some of the others imitate this behavior (to a lesser extent) at times. Now, having said all that...he did seem to turn a corner at the end of this season, so let's hope it's for real.

final word: It's getting a little less fun to watch. I think it's time to have the main character finally admit his flaws and deal with them - we've been back and forth on this for several seasons.
