Shark Attack

Steven: "Excuse me? You’re going to bring a live shark aboard my boat?"
Mani: "Don’t worry, we’ll tranquilize it."

release year: 1999
genre: shark drama
viewing setting: home DVD 11/30/21

synopsis: Something's fishy in a South African village, as shark attacks are on the rise and a mysterious lab seems up to no good.

impressions: So when I said "shark drama" above, I didn't mean a sitcom starring a family of sharks (actually, that was Deep Blue Sea.) No, I mean that this was actually a solid drama - only set in a fishing town suffering from shark attacks amidst human evildoers. For a TV movie, this had a surprising amount of blood and guts, and seemed to have used real sharks. While it wasn't an epic giant shark movie (or even a giant shark movie) it was an aggressive shark movie...and it moved along well and had plot twists and turns.

acting: A still-young Casper Van Dien is the main scientist guy, who can also hold his own in a fight. Jenny Mcshane is his new friend and love interest, whose chin is almost as prominent as Van Dien's. Ernie Hudson is a shifty rich guy. Bentley Mitchum is an evil scientist. Tony Caprari is a helpful boat/van driver.

final word: Surprisingly entertaining and well-made shark film.
