Sharktopus vs Pteracuda

"It killed a bunch of people...then flew off. We need to borrow Sharktopus to try and bring it back. Assuming, of course, he's for hire."    - Hamilton

release year: 2014
genre: shark horror/action/comedy
viewing setting: home DVD, 9/8/21

synopsis: The latest invention - Pteracuda - is on the loose, and the same scientist who created it comes up with a crazy plan to stop it.

impressions: Another silly but entertaining one. The believability factor here is higher than Sharknado but somewhere less than Deep Blue Sea or The Meg. As expected, they lose control of their monster in the first five minutes of the movie, then spend the next ninety chasing it and trying to stop it. There were four battles between the title creatures (0:34, 0:47, 1:12, 1:22) and those were fairly satisfying. Other elements of note: an imitation Thomas Jane, a Conan O'Brien appearance, volleyball players who don't realize that they're now playing with a severed head, a stupid vacationing couple, an A-Team moment in the toolshed.

confirmed sharktopus kills: 8.5 (the .5 is for the guy who both monsters ripped in half)

confirmed pteracuda kills: 12.5, plus a plane

acting: Robert Carradine really hams it up as the evil scientist. Rib Hillis is the aforementioned imitation Thomas Jane; he's the tough right-hand-man who takes charge of stopping the monsters. Katie Savoy is the marine biologist, and does a good job with her role. Akari Endo is an annoying reporter.

final word: Fairly entertaining monster action, and a worthy sequel.
