Sixteen Candles
release year: 1984genre: high school comedyviewing setting: home laserdisc, 6/12/97what I expected: entertaining foolishnesswhat I got: another reminder of the craziness of high school
synopsis: Samantha's having the worst 16th birthday possible; her family forgot, her spoiled sister's getting married to an idiot, a foreign exchange student is living in her bedroom for the weekend, the guy she likes doesn't even know she exists, and she's being pursued by the Geek.
impressions: Hilarious. It kept me laughing the whole time.
acting: Molly Ringwald plays this kind of role well, ditto for Anthony-Michael Hall. John Cusack played another geek with flair. The show was often stolen, however, by Long Duk Dong...the Donger. See the movie and you'll understand.
final word: A superior example of this genre.
rating: B
