Spy Game

release year: 2001
genre: drama
viewing setting: home DVD, 8/21/03

synopsis: A veteran CIA agent tries to get his young ex-disciple rescued from a hostile country with 24 hours until execution.

impressions: This one didn't do it for me. There were some neat parts, mostly involving the crafty veteran using his experience and contacts to outwit other people, but the subplot about why the younger agent did what he did and got captured made little sense. I didn't care for the implications of the ending either.

something this movie has that no other movie has: For once, I'm not sure.

acting: Robert Redford did a great job as the CIA lifer who really just wants to save his former student's life. Brad Pitt was pretty good as that younger agent. The romantic lead for the latter was utterly unappealing to me.

final word: Confusing and sometimes pointless espionage drama with some neat parts.
